Los Padres:
My name is Mrs. (Señora) Cristin Hansen. I am excited to have your student in my Spanish class this year and for the activities I have planned. I’m eager to work with your student and help further their language and cultural skills.
About your teacher: I am originally from Colorado/Wyoming but I went to Middle School and High School at Freeland High School near Saginaw, Michigan. I am moving to the area from Dayton, Oho where I have spent the last 3 years teaching 6-8 grade Spanish. I graduated college from Cedarville University. I spent two years teaching high school and coaching in Tiffin, OH after graduation. I moved to Dayton and was married in June 2012 to my wonderful husband Ryan. We current reside in Holland. After our wedding we spent a week in Mexico visiting the Mayan ruins of Chitchen Itza, Coba and Tulum as well as practicing our Spanish speaking skills with the natives. I love traveling and have been to several Spanish speaking countries. I spent 5 weeks in the summer of 2011 in Chile where I traveled, learned Chilean culture and practiced my Spanish. I also spent a semester abroad studying at the Universidad de Sevilla in Spain where I also taught English at a primary school. In the summer of 2008 I spent 6 weeks in the Dominican Republic teaching English at the Atlanta Braves Baseball Academy. I love sports and have coached the freshman, JV and 7th grade volleyball as well as middle school track. Volleyball is my first love but I also enjoy playing and watching all sports especially football, soccer, basketball, swimming and track and field. I love nature and like to go tent camping and hiking. I also enjoy bike riding, rollerblading and working out as well as Mexican food with cherry Dr. Pepper or Pepsi/Coke.
Expectations: I have high expectations of each of my students and I am dedicated to helping them reach individual success. Students will have homework assignments as well as in-class work, projects, tests, and quizzes. In the next few days I will be sending home an outline of my grading policies and classroom expectations along with an outline of study strategies for a foreign language and ways for you to help your student at home.
Success: In order to be successful in a foreign language, I believe students need to be exposed to it as much as possible as well as try to produce the language in written and spoken form as early as possible. Although this can be frustrating at first, students will become used to hearing the language and it will get easier. I do not expect perfection or for students to understand every individual Spanish word. Mistakes are expected and warmly welcomed – mistakes are how we truly learn! I know everyone in my class will make mistakes – including myself! To encourage use of the language, a portion of the grade will be based on participation.
Environment: The best environment for students to succeed is one in which teachers and parents/guardians work together. To help us reach this goal, here is my contact information:
